Streamed this one from Netflix. A creepy trail into the insanity of a child's nightmare. Had me wondering if it was a monster or a neglecting mother tale but surely it will creep you out.

The Babadook is currently scaring the pants off critics across the country. I recently saw this inventive Australian horror film at a Cinefamily screening in Los Angeles. The movie follows a single mother and her disturbed son as they’re stalked by a creepy creature from a bedtime story called “Mister Babadook.”

If you’re like me, you’re probably wondering – is the Babadook based off an actual Australian legend?

Short Answer: No.

Longer Answer: Eh, still no.

Babadook certainly sounds like some crazy fairy tale from Down Under. The name isn’t any stranger than those of actual Australian cryptids (check out the Tiddalik or the Bunyip)

But no, it turns out Babadook is just an anagram for “A Bad Book”.
Director Jennifer Kent loosely based the film off her 2005 short, “Monster”.

That low budget black & white film features a creature that bears some similarities to the Babadook but looks much more human.
Interestingly, the short never mentions the word “Babadook” and the bedtime story doesn’t feature into the creature’s mythos.

Well worth a look folks, could very well be our finest horror movie thus far, though there's a few that run it very close.

Thought it was a terrifying film. I highly recommend giving it a watch
You guys are making me think that I should be watching this one. Jethro is our resident horror guy and I don't recall him describing other movies as being amongst the finest!

Seems recently we are getting a great horror movie each year, It Follows, The Witch, Train to Busan, immediately spring to mind.

Brit movie critic Mark Kermode nominated The Babadook as best movie of the year back in the day (y)
