Wow, this is a bit shocking. Comedian & actor Robin Williams died today at the age of 63!

Officials are investigating the death of actor and comedian Robin Williams. ... Williams was found unconscious Monday afternoon at about 12:00 p.m. inside his residence ... Investigators said that Williams was last seen alive at his residence, where he resides with his wife, at approximately 10:00 pm on Sunday. ... Coroner Division suspects the death to be a suicide due to asphyxia, but a comprehensive investigation must be completed before a final determination is made.

After the cancellation of his last show, The Crazy Ones, there were some reports of Williams having some addiction relapse issues but I don't think anybody was expecting this.

His publicist released this statement:
Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.

All indications so far is that it was a suicide.

Williams' wife, Susan Schneider, issued this statement:
This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.

Sad news indeed.

Great actor, my favorite roles were actually his darker ones, Insomnia and One Hour Photo spring to mind. I loved Patch Adams too, I often thought that his Patch character showed the kind of person that Robin appeared to be himself in real life.

Such sad news, I was so shocked when I heard the news. Feeling the loss deeply. My favorite movies varied, both the light roles, Jack & Jumanji, and then the darker roles, The Final Cut & Insomnia. Loved the BirdCage as well. I watched all his movies I think and really enjoyed all of them and the diversity of roles he played. Great actor.

It was revealed today that he was in the early stages of Parkinsons Diseases. For somebody battling depression, I suspect that having a show cancelled and then dealing with a future of health issues could drive them over the edge.

That revelation of Parkinsons is pretty much the clincher. I also wouldn't easily condemn suicides as "weak" people. Everyone had their own personal demons to deal with, some handle them better than others, but it doesn't make them better people necessarily.

Video tribute I saw somewhere.

Nobody in this thread described suicides as "weak" people. :cautious:

I've battled one form or another of depression all my life. Suicide has been a constant option that I have examined fully. I can see both sides of the argument. Why am I still alive? I guess I am just waiting to see if it gets any better. Plus with 11 grandchildren I have lots of entertainment.
My sickness keeps me in pain & misery every single day of my life. I can't get pain meds because I have suicide in my med record and no dr will prescribe anything that actually works. So I exist knowing it will only get worse.
If Mr Williams concluded that the option of getting sick, losing control of his functions and possibly his self I can see why he chose this option.
So many people are really quick to judge and fail to imagine what it is like to be in that frame of mind.
