Sci-Fi Harbinger Down (2015)

Tom

An Old Friend
HARBINGER DOWN is the all Practical Effects (PFX) creature film the fans have asked for. Funded through Kickstarter and Dark Dunes Productions, Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr. of StudioADI present an alternative to big studio CG driven genre films. Please help us spread the word. Let the revolution begin.

A group of grad students have booked passage on the fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship’s crew dredges up a recently thawed piece of old Soviet space wreckage, things get downright deadly. It seems that the Russians experimented with tardigrades, tiny resilient animals able to withstand the extremes of space radiation. The creatures survived, but not without mutation. Now the crew is exposed to aggressively mutating organisms. And after being locked in ice for 3 decades, the creatures aren’t about to give up the warmth of human companionship.

The description makes me think a bit of Leviathan where oil riggers fight creatures after coming across a sunken Russian sub. Fishing boat for the oil riggers, crashed Soviet space wreckage for the sub.

IIRC there was 'Leviathan' and 'Deepstar Six' about the same time as 'Abyss'.
Oh, and 'Lords of the Deep'. I didn't think any were very good.

you're right, that sort of started the monster-in-closed-place genre.
thx for the original post btw. I don't follow the film industry much.

Leviathan was about a deep water silver extraction mining team. They found a sunken research vessel called Leviathan that was purposely sunk to hide a genetic experiment gone wrong.

This is one of the reasons why I don't mind older threads being bumped... it reminds me of stuff that I've meant to watch/read but haven't yet. (y)

When you're done, let us know if it was worth watching. :coffee:

Well, That was a let down. Perhaps on 2nd or 3rd viewing it will be better. The creature effects resembled the 1984 The Thing (not CGI) but the acting and filming were awful. Still better than a syfy original tho.
I felt nothing for the characters and the creatures were a mishmash of stuff. The only creature I liked was the girl creature that fights the big guy. She was cool looking.
If you are looking for an extention of The Thing this is not it. If you watch this movie before you watch The Thing movies The Thing movies will look even better than you imagined.
If you decide to watch this movie, keep your expectations low.

I caught this one over the weekend on Netflix. It's essentially a remake of the 1999 Jamie Lee Curtis movie Virus. Instead of a Russian research ship, it's a downed Russian moon lander. Instead of a virus that takes over tech, it's a virus that takes over organic material which, as Tom mentions above, looks & acts like The Thing.

Unless you're really bored and/or a horror film fan who'll watch just about anything, skip this one and watch Virus and all of the various The Thing movies. I don't recall who produced Harbinger Down but it felt like an Asylum movie on SyFy Channel.
