Looking for a title... a planet with a moon in low orbit

I'm looking for an ebook or audiobook version of a story I read 30+ years ago.
Don't even recall the author, but I suspect he was one of the big names, as I tended to only buy books with big-name authors.

I don't recall the beginning/ending; all I recall is someone landing on a planet, discovering a weird 'gash' in the ground (later discovered to be a low-orbiting moon, digging up the ground, poking holes through mountains...) and the natives 'stepping over' its orbital path to avoid getting... well, killed!

Thanks for any help...

I remember a short story about that in re; Mars. I think it was in a collection, not sure if it was all the same author. the explorer captain, who loved puns, dubbed the moon 'Bottomos' (to go along with the other moons, Deimos and Phobos). cue the groans.

'Holes Around Mars', Jerome Bixby
