TIGHT ON SLOANE at the mention of Sydney's name.
LINDSEY (CONT'D)
I'm looking for someone trained in
wetwork. In particular, a dead
shot with a long range rifle.
On Sloane as he realizes: Sydney is the target.
LINDSEY (CONT'D)
I plan on making the trade. During
the exchange, I want Sydney Bristow
taken out.
SLOANE
(beat)
You want Bristow killed. Then why
make the trade? Let The Covenant
end her life.
LINDSEY
I need assurance. That Sydney
Bristow is eliminated.
SLOANE
She has something on you, does she?
LINDSEY
If she's hit by a sniper it'll
appear as if it was a Covenant
double-cross.
SLOANE
(beat, calmly)
With all due respect. Mr.
Director. What guarantees do I
have this isn't some form of
entrapment? Saying "yes" to your
offer in and of itself would
constitute a violation of my pardon
agreement.
LINDSEY
Because I know what you're up to,
Mr. Sloane. I can see your big
picture, I know your endgame.
(then)
I even have proof.
And Lindsey holds out a MANILA ENVELOPE. Sloane finally
takes it, opens it, eyes perusing a document inside.
After a beat -- and we're EXTREMELY CLOSE -- Sloane looks
up at Lindsey -- eyes full of anger, and yes, fear.
LINDSEY (CONT'D)
Once I arrange the trade, I'll be
in touch with details.
And he walks off, leaving Sloane there, rocked -- and we're
wondering: what the hell does Lindsey have on Sloane?
-------------------------------------
SILENCE.
Slowly, a sound rises up again: a SIREN. From an ambulance.
As the screen snaps back into focus, a FAMILIAR FACE enters
the frame, staring directly into camera. Vaughn. A soft
smile, concerned:
VAUGHN
Hey...
We're:
INT. AMBULANCE - TRAVELING - NIGHT
Sydney's eyes blink into focus -- as she gets her bearings:
SYDNEY
... Vaughn?
VAUGHN
Yeah, it's me...
She's lying on a gurney, in the back of an ambulance. An IV
hooked into her arm. She tries to sit up. An EMT reaches
out, keeping her prone --
EMT
Don't move, you've suffered a
severe head trauma.
SYDNEY
(mind tumbling)
... what?
He shines a light in her eye -- she squints:
EMT
Any nausea or dizziness?
SYDNEY
... No... where am I?
EMT
On the way to the hospital. You
have a mild concussion, you'll be
okay --
(to Vaughn)
-- we'll run a CT scan to check for
bleeding.
VAUGHN
(grave)
Sydney, what's the last thing you
remember?
SYDNEY
... Dr. Brezzel... The lab--
(beat, trying to remember)
I'm not sure...
VAUGHN
You were unconscious when we found
you.
(beat)
Listen, Will's gonna be okay.
SYDNEY
-- what?! Will?
VAUGHN
He lost a lot of blood, but we got
to him in time. He's on his way to
Cedar's.
SYDNEY
(words that don't compute)
... Will's in witness protection --
Vaughn glances at the EMT with concern -- the EMT explains:
EMT
This is normal -- gaps in memory
leading up to the injury. The more
you talk to her, the more it'll
come back.
Vaughn takes Sydney's hand -- this'll be hard explain, even
harder for her to hear:
VAUGHN
Listen to me: the woman you've been
living with wasn't Francie. We
found a file Will was compiling...
her name is Allison Doren, you shot
her--
SYDNEY
-- I know: she was the second
double, the one we never found --
VAUGHN
(hopeful)
-- it's coming back to you --
She sits up, anxious --
EMT
Miss, you need to lie d--
SYDNEY
-- wait, wait...
(to Vaughn, eagerly)
Has Sloane been pardoned by the
State Department?
VAUGHN
(almost a laugh)
Pardoned? He's number two on
Interpol's most wanted list --
SYDNEY
-- The Covenant, have you heard of
The Covenant?
VAUGHN
(a beat, recalling)
... The Russian Reformist Militia?
They were listed on the sit-report
yesterday under "emerging
threats"... why, were they involved
in this?
-- and she looks down at his hand: oh my God...
SYDNEY
... You don't have a wedding
ring...
VAUGHN
(a smile)
... I... thought we'd go to Santa
Barbara first and see how that
went.
SYDNEY
(eyes welling)
... You're not married?
VAUGHN
... You really hit your head,
didn't you?
Tears come to her eyes -- Dear God, the past eight episodes
were a dream!
SYDNEY
I thought you gave up on us...
His face: gave up on them? His eyes nearly welling with
tears now, too:
VAUGHN
Syd... when I came into your
apartment and saw you lying there,
I thought... God, please don't let
me miss my chance to tell her how
much I love her...
(beat)
We haven't said it yet -- I love
you. I've been wanting to say it --
SYDNEY
... I love you, too... so much...
And they kiss, desperate for each other -- she holds him
there, holding on so tight...
